Preemie beanie for sweet little heads

Learn how to make a basic preemie beanie. Why not make a beanie for your preemie bub that not only keeps them warm and safe, but makes them look fabulous as well?

Before you begin

Your beanie will differ in size when using different types of thread, ply, or hook. Always check with the parent, hospital, or carer to find out if they prefer pure wool, cotton, or acrylic yarns before starting.

This pattern uses American crochet terminology

Hook: G - 4mm hook
Yarn: 8ply Cleckeaton Wool (any 8ply wool can also be used) I typically use Bendigo Woollen Mills – 8 ply Luxury wool
Difficulty: Easy to intermediate

Abbreviations and glossary (US Terms)

  • ch - chain (chs – chains)

  • dc - double crochet

  • ss - slip stitch

  • FPHDC – front post half double crochet

  • BPHDC – back post half double crochet

  • * to * means repeat pattern until end of row

Pattern

Row 1.  Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) then place 11 dc in centre of the ring. (12 dc) ss in top of 3rd chain from the first 3 chains created.

Row 2.   Ch 2, (does not count as a dc) 1 dc in same space. Then 2 dc in next double and each dc to the end. 1 dc in same space as first ch 2 from the beginning of the row. Now skip the ch 2 chains and ss into first dc created. (24 dc).

Row 3.   Ch 2, 1 dc in same space. *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc* continue from * _ * to the end. 1 dc in same space as first chain 2 from the beginning of the row. Skip the chain 2 and Slip Stitch in top of first dc created. (36 dc).

Row 4.   Ch 2 (does not count as a dc) 1 dc in same space. 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc * continue *-* to the end. 1 dc in same space as first ch 2 from the beginning of the row. Skip the chain 2 and slip Stitch in top of first dc. (48 dc).

Row 5.   Ch 2, (does not count as a dc) 1 dc in next dc and each dc to the end. 1 dc in the same space as chain 2. Slip Stitch in top of first dc (48 dc).

Rows 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10.   Repeat row 5

Final row.   Ch 2, FPHDC in first dc, BPHDC in next dc until end. Ss to join, pull up a loop, cut yarn and weave in all ends.
